Fractured
STATEMENT
Uncertainty. Fractures. Facets. Fragments. Figments. Create space! Deny space! Confuse space!
My practice investigates spatial instability by playing with the illusion of depth on two-dimensional surfaces. Through slippery, shifting angles and architectural evocations like staircases or corners, I create spaces that collapse and invert. What appears as a cavity may become a convexity, flip-flopping, and challenging the viewer's perceptions. Primarily using painting and collage, I add graphite and colored pencil, emphasizing transparencies and shadows to explore these contradictions.
My process sometimes involves photographing my paintings, or manipulating my photos digitally, printing, then reworking and overpainting. This process creates evolving "cousins" or “evil twins", a series of images that continue to cross-pollinate.
Don't be fooled! All images are 2d. Well, almost all.
My very latest works collapse space in a different way. The found object sculptures, all linear elements, are joined with loose wires, yarn, rope, and ribbon, allowing the structures to change and move depending on where they are hung or tossed. Instability!
These works resonate for me in our post-truth world – surfaces are never fixed and perceptions cannot be trusted.
